Spring 1957 marked an unexpected turn for Lump, a dachshund who would become an unlikely muse for one of the world's most renowned artists. David Douglas Duncan, a photojournalist and friend to Pablo Picasso, was joined by Lump on a visit to the artist's home near Cannes.
As they arrived at Villa La Californie, Lump's enthusiasm proved too great, and he made himself at home with Picasso. This chance encounter would lead to an extraordinary collaboration, as Picasso immortalized Lump in a series of paintings inspired by Velasquez's 'Las Meninas'. Fourteen of these historic works are reproduced here in full colour, alongside Duncan's dramatic photographs.
