Description
Global capitalism is facing its terminal crisis. Slavoj Žižek identifies four horsemen of this apocalypse: ecological crisis, economic imbalances, biogenetic revolution, and social divisions. As the end of capitalism seems like the end of the world to many, how can Western society face up to it? Žižek argues that collective responses to economic Armageddon correspond to stages of grief: ideological denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and withdrawal. He examines cultural and political forms of these stages, from New Age obscurantism to violent religious fundamentalism. A compelling argument for a Marxian critique of political economy follows, along with a vision for a potentially communist culture. The crisis is seen as a chance for a new beginning, rather than an end. Žižek explores the wellsprings of this culture, from literary utopias like Kafka's community of mice to the collective of freak outcasts in Heroes.
