Description
A solitary lifeboat remains bobbing on the wild blue Pacific after the sinking of a cargo ship. The only survivors from the wreck are Pi Patel and four other animals, including a hyena, a wounded zebra, an orangutan, and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger. Pi's survival at sea is marked by his ability to coexist with the tiger, Richard Parker, for 227 days. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees into the jungle, never to be seen again. The Japanese authorities who interrogate Pi press him to tell them "the truth," and he tells a second story - one that is much less fantastical, but also much more conventional. The tension between these two stories raises questions about the power of storytelling and the nature of survival. Is Pi's fantastical tale a reflection of his own imagination, or is it a desperate attempt to make sense of his experiences?
