Levant Splendour and Catastrophe on the Mediterranean is a history of three cities: Smyrna, Alexandria, and Beirut. These cities were once vibrant centres of wealth, pleasure, and freedom, serving as windows to the world for their inhabitants.
The book explores the colourful and contradictory histories of these cities from the sixteenth century to the mid twentieth century, using unpublished family papers to shed new light on their stories. Smyrna was ravaged by fire, Alexandria underwent Egyptianisation, while Beirut was torn apart by civil war.
