Description

The 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler was at the forefront of the German Ardennes offensive in December 1944. The division's advance was marked by a series of challenges, including a delay due to schedule issues and difficulties navigating the treacherous Rollbahn D roads. As the Kampfgruppe Peiper pushed through Stavelot and Trois Pont, they reached Stoumont before being forced to halt at La Gleize due to lack of fuel and US Army action. The situation became increasingly desperate, with the division's armored vehicles succumbing to automotive failures and the men facing a desperate choice: abandon their vehicles or risk capture. The aftermath of the battle saw the loss of 135 armored vehicles, including King Tigers, as well as the bodies of American servicemen and civilians who were massacred along the route.
