Description
On 9/11, Battalion Commander Richard Picciotto led seven companies of firefighters up the stairs of the World Trade Centre's Tower 1. As the world around them exploded, Picciotto ordered the evacuation of the tower, despite being out of radio contact with the command centre. He guided his team through the debris-filled stairwell, using his knowledge of the towers to find an alternate route. The rescue effort was marked by bravery and quick thinking. Picciotto and his team rescued 50 civilians from the 7th floor, just 14 minutes after the collapse of Tower 2. However, their own escape was far from easy. They found themselves buried on the landing of floor 2, with only seconds to spare before Tower 1 fell. This is the story of how Picciotto and a handful of survivors made it out alive.
