Warfare in the Indian Sub-Continent during the early years of the nineteenth century was marked by conflict between the British Empire and the Marathas. A young general, Arthur Wellesley, would later become the Duke of Wellington, fought key battles in this period, including his hardest-won victory at Assaye. In contrast to Wellesley's rising star, the campaigns of Gerard Lake, a seasoned fighting leader, have often been overlooked by historians and students alike. Despite being outnumbered, Lake commanded an army of British regular cavalry and infantry regiments, along with elements of the Honourable East India Company's own army. He fought hard battles and invested in strongly held fortresses, including Aligarh, Agra, Deeg, Assaye-Laswari, and Bhurtpur. This book brings to light Lake's Indian campaign, featuring a range of colourful supporting characters, including Perron, James Skinner and his 'Yellow Boys' irregular cavalry, Colonel Monson, and the Maratha leader Holkar.
