Joseph Banks' Florilegium is a remarkable collection of botanical engravings created during Captain Cook's first voyage around the world. Between 1768 and 1771, Joseph Banks, a gifted naturalist, collected over 1,300 species of flora from various locations, including Madeira, Brazil, and Java. These engravings, known as Banks' Florilegium, are considered some of the most precise and exquisite examples of botanical illustration ever created. The Florilegium was never published in Banks' lifetime, but a complete set in color was issued in 1990. This compact edition features prints selected by David Mabberley, an expert in botany, who has provided expert commentaries. Art historian Mel Gooding sets the works in context, while an afterword by Joe Studholme explores the history of modern printing. The book showcases not only the scientific achievements of Banks' Florilegium but also its significance as a collaborative work of art from the Enlightenment era.
