Description
The Javelin was the RAF's first and last jet-powered delta-winged fighter, built by Gloster Aircraft Company. Development began in 1946 as a replacement for the Gloster Meteor, with the intention of creating an all-weather interceptor. The aircraft underwent nine operational marks, with its engines upgraded from 8,000 lb to 12,300 lbs of thrust. The Javelin proved capable of intercepting Soviet bombers at altitude and remained the RAF's sole all-weather fighter until the arrival of the English Electric Lightning in service. It operated alongside the Lightning before being retired in 1968, with one machine remaining on display at IWM Duxford until 1975.
