Description

Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island, to a well-to-do family. His early interests in literature and science were marked by remarkable precocity. However, ill-health plagued him in youth, leading to sporadic school attendance and a nervous breakdown in 1908 that rendered him a virtual recluse for several years. It was not until 1914 that Lovecraft began to emerge from his hermitage, discovering the world of amateur journalism and resuming his writing career. Under the encouragement of others, he began to produce a significant amount of work, including essays, poetry, and horror fiction. His life took a new turn in 1921, when he met his future wife, Sonia H. Greene, at an amateur journalism convention. This marked the beginning of a period of expansion, both geographically and intellectually, as he traveled and absorbed literary and intellectual influences. This two-volume edition of S. T. Joshi's biography restores the 150,000 words omitted from the original abridged edition, providing a more comprehensive portrait of Lovecraft's life, work, and thought.
