Richard Wolin explores what Heidegger's Black Notebooks mean for our understanding of arguably the most important philosopher of the twentieth century. For years, it was thought that Heidegger's political beliefs and philosophical doctrines were separate entities. However, the notebooks reveal a far more radical vision of the conservative revolution than previously suspected. Heidegger's dissatisfaction with National Socialism was mainly that it did not go far enough. The notebooks show that his philosophy was suffused with Nazism, rather than being separated from it. This book examines what this means for our understanding of Heidegger and his ideas, and why his legacy remains radically compromised.
