Description
The United States declared war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812, and an invasion of Canada was swiftly launched. However, the initial American successes were short-lived, as they suffered a series of defeats that left them at the mercy of English ships. These ships effectively blockaded the American coastline, subjecting it to hit-and-run raids and the capture of numerous vessels. The majority of the captured crew members were transported to Plymouth in southwest England, where they were imprisoned in the notorious Dartmoor depot. This facility, originally built to house 3,000 French prisoners-of-war, was instead used to incarcerate over 10,000 American prisoners. Their experiences would prove to be a turning point in their lives, as they faced an uncertain and perilous future.
