The Origin and Deeds of the Goths, written by Jordanes in 551 AD, is the only surviving account of the full story of the origin and history of the Gothic people. This work provides a unique insight into the early history and customs of the Slavs, as well as the origins of the Goths. The exact extent to which Jordanes used the work of Cassiodorus, the supposed source of this account, is unknown, but its significance as a contemporaneous resource cannot be overstated.
