Description
General Lord Ismay's life was marked by significant decision-making at the highest levels of government, both before, during, and after the Second World War. As Secretary of the Committee of Imperial Defence, he advised the government on strategy and preparations for war immediately prior to the outbreak of hostilities. He then served as wartime Chief Staff Officer to Prime Minister Winston Churchill, becoming a close confidant and rarely leaving Churchill's side. Ismay played a crucial role in conciliating the relationship between the Prime Minister and the Service Chiefs of Staff, and his influence extended to his later roles. As Chief of Staff to the Viceroy in India in 1947, he was closely involved in the drama of Partition. He later became the first Secretary General of NATO from 1952 to 1957, instrumental in building the foundations of the Alliance and preserving its unity and cohesion during the Cold War. This biography tells the story of his life and work, shedding light on a pivotal figure in modern history.
