The Franklin Expedition was not alone in suffering early and unexplained deaths. In fact, both Back and Ross experienced severe illness on their expeditions, with Ross suffering more fatalities during his single winter in the Arctic than Franklin did during his first. The crews of these expeditions were forced to retreat due to a mysterious illness that stalked their ships. Recent research suggests that this illness was caused by the crews' reliance on a new technology: tinned foods. This led to exposure to lead, a poisonous substance that has been linked to the expedition's fate. The authors argue that this was a major factor in the expedition's demise, and that it also left the seamen vulnerable to scurvy, a disease that had been thought to be largely cured in the early 19th century.
