The company's history is marked by significant changes, including the privatization of British Rail in 1996 and the transfer of its assets to Freightliner 1995 Ltd. In 1999, Freightliner set up its Heavyhaul side of the business as a direct competitor to English Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS). Today, major maintenance depots are located at Crewe Basford Hall and Leeds Midland Road.
