The Churchill Infantry Tank: A Driver's Handbook. Designed to replace the Matilda II and Valentine, the Churchill tank was renowned for its ability to cross rough terrain and defeat obstacles. The British Army's need for mobility became clear after the fall of France and the defeat at Dunkirk in 1940. A new design, the A22, was awarded to Vauxhall Motors, with orders to have the tank in production by 1941. The resulting Mk. 1 Churchill was powered by twin-six gasoline engines, featuring a new gear box that allowed it to be steered by the relative speed of its tracks. The Mk. I Churchill first saw combat at the Dieppe Raid, where its performance was underwhelming. Subsequent developments led to the introduction of the Mk. III, which featured a welded turret and a 6-pdr gun, proving its worth at El Alamein. The Mk. VII, produced later, offered a 75mm gun, wider chassis, and thicker armor.
