Description
The first aircraft carrier landing in history took place on HMS Furious in August 1917. This small act marked the beginning of a new era in naval aviation. Over the next two decades, the Royal Navy developed its Fleet Air Arm, which would go on to play a crucial role in World War II. The first purpose-built British aircraft carriers were launched in the late 1930s, with HMS Ark Royal setting the standard for future designs. These carriers proved highly effective in European waters, where their steel flight decks and modified design allowed them to withstand damage that would cripple American counterparts. The British aircraft carriers saw action in every theatre of war, including the Pacific, and played a significant role in several key battles, including the attack on an Italian naval base and the sinking of the Bismarck. However, their success came at a cost, with several carriers being lost to enemy action.
