America's First Marines: Gooch's American Regiment, 1740- 1742
In 1740, Great Britain declared war on Spain, sparking the War of Jenkin's Ear. As part of their Caribbean expedition, British forces incorporated American soldiers into their land force, forming Gooch's Regiment. This regiment, commanded by the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, consisted of thirty-six companies raised in nine North American colonies.
One notable company was led by Lawrence Washington, a future prominent figure in American history. The Marines played key roles in several battles, including the siege of Cartagena, an occupation of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and an assault on Portobello. Their experiences took them to the Island of Ruatan, where they were eventually forced to serve as sailors due to the challenges of life in the tropics.
