However, this text is actually a work of fiction, with the latter half presenting a radical and thought-provoking vision of a communist society. The story follows a traveller who encounters an isolated but advanced civilisation living in communism and worshipping the Sun. This 'Heliopolitan' society is the descendant of Greek philosophers who travelled east in the aftermath of Alexander the Great's death, and who preserve the ancient Greek language to this day. In this unusual utopia, the inhabitants pay homage to the Sun as the most powerful visible material thing, but reject the idea of a Creator God or higher non-material principle. Their views on Christianity are also striking, with the traveller's copy of the New Testament being shelved among the books of 'mythology' in their state library.
