Description

Edgar Mittelholzer's A Swarthy Boy is a poignant and introspective account of his childhood in British Guyana. Born into an Anglo-Germanic family deeply entrenched in their sense of colonial Englishness, Mittelholzer recounts the challenges of growing up in a rigidly stratified society where racial and class hierarchies dominated every aspect of life. The book offers a unique perspective on the Victorian domestic life of New Amsterdam, as well as the stifling effects of an elite that was both snobbish and uncreative. Through his writing, Mittelholzer found solace and a means to transcend his surroundings, ultimately forging a path towards becoming a writer. This edition includes an introduction by Jeremy Poynting, an afterword by Jacqueline Pointer, two autobiographical essays by the author, and an extract from his travelogue With a Carib Eye (1958).
