Description
The First World War started slowly enough, with the British economy being run ragged by the impending conflict. In August 1914, the government extended the bank holiday to include Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, August 4th, 5th, and 6th, to prevent hoarding of gold coins. To address the shortage of new banknotes, the government issued the £1 and 10 shilling notes, with the £5 note being the lowest denomination available at the time. The people of Bath, Somerset, did not anticipate the war's impact, as their local Territorial Regiments, the Yeomanry, were formed as Home Defence units only. The locals believed this would be a minor conflict, with the war ending by Christmas. However, the arrival of the Americans in 1917 changed the war's designation, and it became known as the World War. The Yeomanry, viewed as "weekend warriors" by their regular counterparts, played a significant role in the war. Despite initial reservations about using the Territorial Force, Kitchener eventually utilized it as the basis for his New Army.
