Description
The final year of World War II saw the Allied forces steadily gain ground in the Mediterranean skies. Despite the withdrawal of units to more demanding areas, the Anglo-American powers continued to push back against the Axis forces. This fifth volume of the series provides a detailed account of the activities of the Allied tactical air forces as they supported the armies on the ground during their advance northwards through northern Italy and the Balkans. The book covers the final fierce air-sea battles over the Aegean, the ill-conceived British attempt to secure the Dodecanese islands, and the subsequent advance into central Europe. The authors examine the creation of a new Balkan Air Force in eastern Italy, which pursued the German armies withdrawing from Yugoslavia and took possession of newly freed Greece. The impact of this development on the Allied Combined Bombing Offensive is also discussed, setting the stage for the final volume in the series.
