Zhang Huan has emerged as one of the most important artists of the past decade, exploring the limits of the human body and addressing the relationship between physical endurance and spiritual tranquility. In 2006, Zhang established a studio in Shanghai, marking a new direction in his work as he turned from performance to sculpture, painting, and installation. He continues to explore the human body through large-scale sculptures in diverse media, incorporating elements of Chinese heritage and history. Buddhist themes have become increasingly prominent in his work, inspired by his visit to Tibet in 2005. Zhang's recent creations showcase a deeper connection to Chinese culture, using materials such as ash from local Buddhist temples and found objects from the countryside. This new direction in his work offers a unique perspective on the human experience, inviting readers to explore the intersection of physical endurance and spiritual tranquility.
