Description

Zabelle begins in a quiet Boston suburb with the death of an elderly woman whose life remains largely unknown to her family. As the story unfolds, it takes us back in time to Zabelle's childhood in Ottoman Turkey, where she survived the 1915 Armenian genocide and struggled to survive in the Syrian desert. As we follow Zabelle's journey, we see her grow from a young girl into a woman, navigating years of life in an Istanbul orphanage, followed by a fortunate adoption and arranged marriage. Her experiences are marked by both comic interactions and battles with the shadows of her past. This powerful story explores the complexities of identity, culture, and belonging, as Zabelle struggles to reconcile her Armenian heritage with her new life in America.
