Description

Yumbo Gumbo by Keila V. Dawson is a story about family and tradition that celebrates diversity and math in equal measure. When Annabelle's grandparents decide to teach her how to cook gumbo, the family gets stuck on what type of gumbo to make. After a vote, they're left with a tie, leaving them to figure out what to do next. This playful exploration of data and social-emotional reasoning features Louisiana Creole characters and a glossary of Louisiana Creole words. It's part of a series that encourages children to use math in their daily adventures, making it easy for kids and their grown-ups to explore everyday math together. Developed with the help of math experts at STEM education nonprofit TERC, Yumbo Gumbo is perfect for families who enjoy cooking, learning about different cultures, and exploring the world around them.
