Description
The Yokosuka D4Y 'Judy' Units is a detailed guide to one of Japan's most significant dive-bombers during World War II. In 1938, the Japanese Navy developed the D4Y Suisei ("Comet") in response to a requirement for a carrier-borne dive-bomber, which eventually became known as "Judy" to the Allies. The 'Judy' proved to be an important asset for the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service during the latter years of the Pacific War, with notable successes including the sinking of the USS Princeton and the near-sinking of the USS Franklin. However, its design shortcomings, such as inadequate armor protection and no self-sealing fuel tanks, led to significant losses when pitted against advanced US Navy fighters. The 'Judy' played a key role in Japan's final months of World War II, with many aircraft employed in the kamikaze role due to their high-speed characteristics. A notable example is the last combat action of the war, where 11 D4Ys were flown on an ill-fated "search mission" by Vice Admiral Matome Ugaki on August 15, 1945.
