Description

Daniel Whaley's decision to leave his university position and isolate himself on Hemlock Knob in southwestern Pennsylvania appears to be an act of desperation. However, events during his year-long tenure suggest he has been drawn into a fate that long awaited him. The mountain, where Daniel grew up, holds a special significance as the site of his great-great-grandfather Adam Reilly's settlement after returning from the Civil War. It is here that Daniel plans to restore the family homestead and carve wooden spoons, much like Adam did before him. As he works on the mountain, Daniel undergoes a mysterious transformation, adopting the dress and demeanor of his Irish ancestor. This transformation proves advantageous when Attorney Maurice Nicklow and his son Donald move to acquire Hemlock Knob for a wealthy client from Pittsburgh. The confrontation with the Nicklows is inevitable, and Daniel's new identity gives him an unexpected edge in the face of adversity.
