Description
Simon Taylor was one of the wealthiest slaveholders in the British empire at the time of his death in 1813. His sugar plantation in Jamaica, which he owned outright, held over 2,248 enslaved people.
The brutal slave regime that existed in the Caribbean during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was a central part of the empire's economy. The forced labour of hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans provided the basis for the immense fortunes of plantation owners like Taylor.
Through his letters, Christer Petley offers an intimate glimpse into the life of a wealthy and powerful slaveholder during a tumultuous period in history. Taylor's letters provide insight into the workings of the Jamaican plantation world, as well as the ambitions and frustrations of those who owned the plantations.
