Description
Reuven Tsur's investigation into the expressive effect of sound patterns explores the mysterious intuitions people have about the perceptual qualities and emotional symbolism of speech sounds.
Research has identified two distinct types of aural perception: one that treats acoustic signals as musical or natural noises, and another that excludes them from awareness. Tsur proposes a third type, a poetic mode in which some part of the signal becomes accessible to consciousness.
He examines how infants' nonreferential babbling sounds form a basis for aesthetic valuation of language, tests the validity of spatial and tactile metaphors for certain sounds, and considers the relative merits of cognitive and psychoanalytic approaches to the emotional symbolism of speech sounds. Tsur illustrates his insights with reference to particular literary texts.
