Description
Waves Stories by Bei Dao is a poignant collection of novellas that capture the turbulent years of China's Cultural Revolution and its aftermath. Written in a style that avoids polemics, the author focuses on the individual experiences of those swept up in the political turmoil. Bei Dao himself has been a victim of censorship, and his writing reflects this experience. The title novella was written clandestinely in a makeshift darkroom while he was ostensibly developing photographs. This personal connection to the subject matter lends weight to the stories that follow. A powerful and thought-provoking work, Waves Stories offers a unique perspective on one of China's most tumultuous periods.
