Description
The art of walking has gained new significance as a social phenomenon in the 21st century. Beyond everyday physical movement and modern moments of relaxation and sensory experience, it touches on current questions of ecological, global, geopolitical, and economic change. The SCHIRN's exhibition WALK! provides an overview of the often-overlooked aspect of walking as practice in contemporary art production. The show explores the evolution of Walking Art, which originated in Minimalism, Land Art, and Conceptual Art of the 1960s. It presents over 40 international artists whose work features walking as a key element. The exhibition includes around 100 photographs, video works, collages, drawings, paintings, sculptures, live performances, and participatory projects in public spaces, which aesthetically link walking with the challenges of our time. These artworks reflect current debates on globalisation and climate change, while also documenting forms of protest and demonstration.
