Description
Waiting for Macedonia offers a unique insight into one of Europe's most significant moments following the collapse of communism. This ethnography explores how identity has been negotiated in Macedonia since Yugoslavia's disintegration, focusing on the everyday habits of young professional women in Skopje.
The author, Ilka Thiessen, examines eight years' worth of research data to understand key aspects of their lives, including family relationships, leisure activities and attitudes towards work. By doing so, she raises important questions about Macedonian, Balkan and Eastern European notions of identity, suggesting that Western discourses may be influencing young urban Macedonians' perceptions of themselves.
