Description
Vita tells the story of two young boys, Diamante and Vita, who arrive in New York City in 1903. Born into a small Italian village, they face prejudice and hardship as Italians are often viewed with suspicion. Living in a chaotic tenement on Prince Street in the city's Italian-American neighborhood, the boys experience hunger, abuse, and their father's possessiveness. As they navigate this difficult world, Diamante and Vita discover death, love, and loyalty together. The author weaves a narrative that is both picaresque and fantastical, drawing from her own family's memories and historical records to bring this story to life. Forty years later, in 1944, the American son of one of the boys sets out to find his father, who fought on the front lines during World War II. This powerful and emotional tale is a testament to the enduring power of human connection and experience.
