Description
Visualizing Beauty: A Study of Feminine Ideals in Modern East Asia This collection of essays explores the intersections between feminine ideals and changing socio-political circumstances in China, Japan, and Korea during the first half of the twentieth century. Eight essays examine visual products that informed concepts of beauty and womanhood, including fashion, interior design magazines, newspaper illustrations, and paintings by women. The book considers the complex relations between feminine subjectivity and the promotion of modernity, commerce, and colonialism through the study of "Traditional Woman" and "New Woman" as historical categories. By analyzing these visual representations, the authors shed light on how physical expressions of femininity have altered women's status in society. Through its diverse range of visual products, Visualizing Beauty offers a nuanced understanding of the ways in which beauty has been constructed and contested in modern East Asia.
