Description

Julia Annas explores how Plato's ideas about virtue and law evolved over time. In this study, she examines the development of Plato's account of the relation between virtue and law from his earlier works to his later treatise, the Laws. Annas shows that, contrary to common assumptions, Plato is concerned with the relationship between virtue and law in both The Republic and the Laws. While his approach in the Laws differs from his earlier one, it attempts to build on the political cultures of actual societies rather than creating a theoretical thought-experiment. This new approach links obedience to law with education to promote understanding of the laws and virtues that they promote. Annas also investigates how this project was later taken up by Cicero and Philo of Alexandria, two prominent writers who were influenced by Plato's ideas on virtue and law.
