Description

Vintage Breadboards: A Collector's Treasure

The earliest known breadboards date back to the 1830s, a time when the Corn Laws were in effect. These laws led to hardship for many people, making bread unaffordable, and as a result, breadboards became a status symbol among those who could afford them. During Victorian times, decorative 'bread-platters' featuring coats-of-arms and mottos became popular among the elite. These beautifully crafted items were not only used for serving bread but also served as souvenirs to commemorate royal ceremonies. By the 1860s, workshops began producing bread-platters more cheaply with standardized carving for the mass market. The production centre shifted to Sheffield in the 1950s, where skilled craftsmen worked together to create matching sets of tableware. This book features 100 colour photographs and includes recipes, making it a valuable resource for collectors and woodworkers alike.
