Description
Vinland is a novel that brings to life the turbulent world of early mediaeval Orkney, where Viking past and Christian future collide. Through the story of Ranald Sigmundson, a young boy struggling to understand his place in this conflicted society, Mackay Brown weaves together elements of seamanship, marriage customs, beliefs and traditions.
The traditional poetry interwoven throughout the prose adds a richness and poignancy to the tales told by Ranald, creating an exquisite celebration of Orcadian history. This is a beautifully written novel that explores the complexities of early mediaeval life, set against the backdrop of Norway, Iceland and Ireland.
