Description
Vigilant Things: On Thieves, Yoruba Anti-Aesthetics, and The Strange Fates of Ordinary Objects in Nigeria
By David T. Doris, published by University of Washington Press in 2011.
This book explores the significance of objects called aale in Yoruba culture, which are used to protect properties from thieves. Aale are often mundane and unassuming, yet they hold important symbolic meaning in Yoruba social and cultural life. Doris argues that these objects reveal the channels of power underlying the visible world.
