Description

Vampire Nation: Violence as Cultural Imaginary is a nuanced analysis of how 'the serbs' were portrayed as metaphorical vampires in the last decades of the twentieth century. Tomislav Z. Longinović examines the cultural and political rhetoric that framed this portrayal, tracing its influence on nationalist discourses. The book explores the Gothic associations of violence, blood, and soil in the writings of intellectuals and politicians during the 1990s, particularly in Western media portrayals of 'the serbs' as a vampire nation. Longinović also examines the early modern invention of 'the serbs', its twentieth-century transformations, and its impact on perceptions of the Balkan region. The author reflects on representations of hybrid identities and their violent destruction in the works of prominent twentieth-century writers, before concluding with a hopeful note on efforts to imagine a new collective identity in non-nationalist terms.
