Description
Ursúa tells the story of Pedro de Ursúa, a young man who sets out to conquer the New World in 1543. With only sixteen years of age and a desire for fortune and adventure, he arrives in Peru, expecting to find wealth and power like many others before him.
However, he soon finds himself in a turbulent region divided between rival groups of conquistadors who are wary of newcomers. It is his uncle Miguel Díaz de Armendáriz's arrival at Cartagena that saves him from this situation, and under his patronage, Pedro begins a long and ambitious career of conquest.
This biography reveals the contradictions of great men - capable of both cruelty and compassion, audacity and conservatism - and explores how these passions shaped the violent history of the Indies. The book offers a glimpse into the mind of one who was driven by his ambition and passion, and whose story is a testament to the complexities of human nature.
