Description

Unruly Women: The Politics of Confinement & Resistance explores the complex issues surrounding women's imprisonment. Most women in prison do not pose a danger to society, but rather challenge patriarchal and capitalist norms that seek to control their bodies and choices. The book examines patterns of female crimes and punishments, from historical witch hunts to modern-day prison conditions. It also delves into institutionalized violence, sexual abuse, and acts of resistance among incarcerated women. Karlene Faith challenges common misconceptions about "deviant" women, instead celebrating the unruly woman who claims her own body and refuses to be silenced. As the US prison system continues to expand, with millions of people behind bars, this book offers a critical perspective on the consequences of forced confinement and surveillance.
