Description

Colonel Hilton, aka Uncle Jack, lives in Mount Jewel, one of Ireland's largest houses. However, his life is turned upside down when he attempts to burn down a lady vicar's bungalow, leading to his placement in Silver Meadows nursing home. After being sacked for bad behaviour, he returns home with his scheming nurse Maria. Life at Silver Meadows is filled with the imperious Mrs Freebody and her collection of difficult women. Uncle Jack must navigate this new environment, surrounded by characters including O'Shea the doctor, Crowley the undertaker, Massey who looks after the horses, and Hennessy the lawyer. This humorous novel explores the challenges of old age. A story about the inevitable advance of old age, Uncle Jack is a witty and occasionally sad tale that showcases Peter Somerville-Large's writing style.
