Description

Twist by Adele Bertei is a harrowing and electric memoir that tells the story of transforming trauma through art, pluck, and imagination. Through the voice of her young alter ego, Maddie Twist, Bertei wages war on the cliché of the "misery memoir" to reveal what it's like to be a queer teen at a time when discovery could be fatal. Bertei's unshakable belief in imagination, poetry, music, and community is revealed through Maddie's voice, providing insight into long-enduring systemic problems without the scrim of adult analysis. The immediacy of this narrative is a revelation, offering a sharp yet tender look at the naked truth. Along the way, Bertei encounters an unforgettable cast of characters, including schizophrenic mothers, drag families, and Vietnam vets. Through Maddie's journey, Bertei transforms trauma into survival, finding love as the ultimate saving grace. This memoir is a powerful exploration of the human experience, refusing to consent to systems of harm and instead offering a message of hope and resilience.
