Description
True Story is a hilarious and unapologetic novel about the early days of stand-up comedy in New York. Set against the backdrop of the late-night comedy clubs in 1979, this debut from Bill Maher follows five aspiring comedians as they navigate their way through the cutthroat world of comedy.
The book takes us into the seedy underbelly of the comedy scene, where desperation for fame and fortune drives these would-be comedians to take risks and push boundaries. With his signature sardonic style, Maher gives us a candid look at the resilient comedians who made up this world, as well as the scumbag promoters, hostile audiences, and die-hard groupies who inhabited it.
True Story is a laugh-out-loud funny novel that's also occasionally touching. It's a true story, in every sense of the word - one that Maher himself lived through, and one that he shares with us with perfect pitch and classic style. If you're looking for a glimpse into the birth of the comedy boom, this is the book for you.
