Description

Roland Barthes' Travels in China is a unique and insightful account of his 1974 journey to China. During this tumultuous period, Barthes was part of a delegation of French philosophers and literary figures who were welcomed by writers and academics but required to follow a predetermined itinerary. The notebooks that make up this book are a fascinating blend of observations on the sights, sounds, and smells of China, alongside reflections and critiques of the world around him. Written over thirty years ago, these notes offer a rare glimpse into China at a time of great change and upheaval. This collection provides a thought-provoking portrait of China in the 1970s, seen through the eyes of one of the world's most renowned semioticians.
