Description

Traveling Home: A vibrant account of contemporary Sacred Harp singing, this book explores how this musical tradition brings together Americans from diverse backgrounds. Named after the most popular 19th-century shape-note tunebook, Sacred Harp singing has been part of rural Southern life for over 150 years. The tradition's participatory nature and widespread appeal have led to its growth across the country, with all-day "singings" taking place in various locations. The advent of internet discussion boards and singer-produced recordings has also changed the way this musical movement is transmitted and perceived. Kiri Miller presents a thought-provoking study that sheds light on Sacred Harp as an expression of American democracy. Through historical scholarship and fieldwork, Miller provides an engaging analysis of this unique musical movement.
