Description

Dante's understanding of tragedy and comedy is a complex and nuanced topic. In this study, Professor Kelly examines Dante's works to uncover his criteria for these genres, revealing that they were based on subject-matter and style rather than emotions or plot movement. Kelly challenges the prevailing view that Dante's commentators held, which attributed similar views to him. Instead, he argues that the 'Epistle to Cangrande' is not by Dante, except possibly for its opening three paragraphs, and ascribes it to "Pseudo-Dante". This work was compiled much later than the original texts, but drew on earlier commentaries. Through a detailed analysis of Dante's works, including the 'Inferno', 'Purgatorio', and 'Paradiso', Kelly sheds new light on the evolution of these genres in medieval literature.
