Description
Theatre in crisis: how can we reclaim its purpose? In "Towards a Civic Theatre", director Dan Hutton argues that a theatre without civic values is not worth fighting for. This book presents a range of ideas and provocations from theatre practitioners, drawing on examples from the performing arts and beyond. Hutton contends that the industry's struggles are symptoms of deeper issues, including decades of free market thinking and austerity measures. He makes the case for a new kind of theatre, one that is fit for purpose in today's tumultuous world. This book offers a toolkit, a guide, and a call to arms for artistic leaders of tomorrow. By exploring the intersection of politics, culture, and performance, "Towards a Civic Theatre" provides a timely and thought-provoking analysis of the future of theatre.
