Description
Tono Monogatari is a graphic novel adaptation of Japan's great work of supernatural literature, drawing on the country's rich folklore. Created by renowned mangaka Shigeru Mizuki, this book brings to life legends from the Tono region, which were recorded as Japan modernized and traditional culture disappeared.
Originally written in 1910, these stories were collected by folklorists Kunio Yanagita and Kizen Sasaki. In this adaptation, Mizuki weaves together the original text with his own autobiography, retracing the path of his predecessors but finding that his old body is not quite up to the challenge. The result is a unique blend of myth and memoir.
